How to reduce the bad smell produced by injection molding plastic processing?

February 19, 2022
It is well known that plastic parts processed products emit an unpleasant smell. In order to overcome this problem to meet the needs of customers, the production of plastic parts has long been committed to reducing the divergence level of these odors. This paper gives a brief summary of the current methods for reducing odor in the production of plastic parts processing plants:
1, using a more pure resin
In many plastics, especially in plastics such as polyvinyl chloride, styrene, polyethyl acetate and acrylates, residual traces of monomers can produce unpleasant odors. Resins with very small monomer residues can eliminate those odor.
If you use the odorless resin itself, it also has a good effect. For example, a plastics processing factory has developed a new grade of acetal copolymer, which emits a very small amount of odor during the injection process.
2, change the additive
The tertiary amine of the catalyst used in the production of polyurethane foam often brings a strong odor and fogging on the inner window of the car. The solution to this problem is to find alternatives to these amines. One of the measures is Using polyhydroxy compounds, polyhydroxy compounds are not only a component of the polyurethane molecular chain, but also have catalytic activity. Some polyols can even replace half of the tertiary amine catalyst, so that the resulting product emits a much weaker odor.
The phenolic stabilizers used in PVC extrusion or calendering are often replaced by low-odor zinc stabilizers. The heat stabilizer tin octoate is also commonly used in automotive PVC products due to its low odor and low atomization properties. 2. Plant extract oils such as erucic acid and oleic acid are much less odorous than amine lubricants (for polyolefin and styrenic food packaging materials) made from animal extract oils.
3, adding adsorbent
If the polymer is filled with a small amount of zeolite (an aluminosilicate adsorbent), it can remove the odor of the material. The zeolite has a large number of crystal cavities, which can capture small molecules of odorous molecules. Adsorbents have been successfully applied to polyolefin extruded pipes, injection and extrusion blow molded containers, insulation packaging materials, extruded outer packaging materials and sealing polymers. Molecular adsorption powders can also be added to plastics as moisture absorbers. In addition to water vapor, these vapors will also help the plastic products to produce odor.
